Population Education and Development Association (PEDA)

Our grassroots partner based in Vientiane, Laos

The Population Education Development Association (PEDA) is a civil society organization that collaborates with organizations and individuals from the grassroots to the national government and international level. Their mission is to promote disease prevention and sustainability through educational efforts in rural villages of Laos. By coordinating with village leadership and Peer Educators, PEDA is passionate about helping ethnic minority groups. PEDA is currently working with the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis, and Malaria to secure grants for their Advocacy, Communication and Social Mobilization (ACSM) programs, encouraging proper healthcare seeking behavior and practices to safe sex. In the past, PEDA has also been involved in human trafficking prevention, livelihood development, and environmental management projects. Currently, they are also starting a program designed to combat malnutrition.

GROW Internship

Each year, 2-4 students from our chapter participate in the Grassroots On-site Work (GROW) internship with PEDA. While in Laos, our students contribute to many aspects of PEDA’s work such as accompanying them on their education expeditions throughout rural Laos villages and helping with grant writing. Students at GlobeMed ND are incredibly passionate about putting our devotion to global health equity into practice, and the GROW internship is just one way we do this.

Pictures from past GROW trips!

Part of anti-oppressive partnership is that our collaboration benefits both PEDA and GlobeMed@ND. As you can tell from the photos, ND students have a lot of fun when participating in GROW while still learning a lot about global health equity and advocacy. The students who participate in GROW then bring what they have learned back to ND to share with their fellow GlobeMed members.

Sustaining Partnership Year-Round

Having seen the PEDA’s work in person, we are determined to raise awareness and funds for PEDA’s mission. Throughout the year, we have video meetings with the Chairman and Vice Chairman of PEDA to ensure that our partnership is strong and sustainable. We believe that partnership has no boundaries, even when you are on opposite sides of the world! Our goal is to have our club members experience what it is like to be engaged in a long term partnership, where there is always room for improvement.
